Mike Fernandez | OJOSEXO STUDIO
OJOSEXO STUDIO is the creative practice of Los Angeles–based mixed-media artist Mike Fernandez. With nearly a decade in New York working as a wardrobe stylist, hairstylist, and groomer, his background in fashion deeply informed his visual language.
Working across digital, Polaroid, and 35mm formats, Fernandez’s imagery explores homoeroticism, bold typography, and the visual mechanics of architectural composition. His practice naturally evolved from collaging his own photographs to incorporating found imagery—sourcing material from vintage advertising, bodybuilding magazines, and subcultural ephemera. Each collage becomes a layered visual narrative assembled by hand. These works are not fixed compositions but evolving ideas—expanded into large-scale painting collages where cut paper is reimagined with water-based glue and acrylic on canvas, blurring the boundaries between print, painting, and assemblage.
Born and raised in Sacramento, California, and partly in San Francisco, Fernandez is the son of gay fathers—a unique upbringing that shaped his visual identity and sensibility. After nearly a decade in New York’s commercial and editorial fashion world, his transition into photography became a natural extension of his aesthetic exploration, eventually leading him to mixed media and collage. Now based in Los Angeles, he continues his investigations into visual culture through large-scale collage paintings under OJOSEXO STUDIO.
A Fine Arts and Vidal Sassoon Academy alum, Fernandez’s work has been exhibited in galleries and featured in publications, existing at the intersection of fashion, photography, and contemporary art.
