Mike Fernandez is a Los Angeles–based mixed-media artist and creative director working under OJOSEXO STUDIO. His current practice centers on Formworks, an evolving body of hand-cut collages and acrylic-and-plaster paintings exploring the relationships between organic and architectural form, color, material, surface, and space.
Fernandez builds his compositions piece by piece. Small, intuitive studies made from hand-cut cardstock balance shape, proportion, visual weight, and negative space. Curved, bodily forms meet harder structural elements, creating a modular visual language that feels simultaneously constructed and organic. Across the work, color carries feeling and geometry sets the tempo.
The collages function as both independent works and maps for larger paintings. Translated into acrylic and plaster, flat arrangements acquire texture, irregularity, depth, and physical presence. As Formworks continues to evolve, Fernandez is exploring how this language can move beyond the picture plane and into objects, architectural surfaces, textiles, and designed environments.
Fernandez’s earlier practice moved between Polaroid, 35mm, and digital photography, found-image collage, editorial image-making, and creative direction. While photography is no longer the primary focus of his studio practice, this background continues to inform his sensitivity to composition, sequencing, styling, and the constructed image—how material and context shape the way something is seen.
Raised in California, Fernandez first exhibited alongside his ceramicist father at age eleven, beginning a lifelong engagement with shape, color, and form. After studying fine arts, he spent nearly a decade in New York working within fashion and editorial culture before returning to California. He now lives and works in Los Angeles, where OJOSEXO STUDIO operates as both a fine-art practice and a platform for art, design, and creative collaboration.
His work has been exhibited in Los Angeles, Berlin, Belfast, and Philadelphia and featured in publications including Collé Magazine, LadyGunn, Iris Covet, Vogue Arabia, and King Kong Magazine.
